11/01/13 - Lynx/Axe is offering adventurous fans the chance to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip into outer space in 2014.
The global competition, launched by Buzz Aldrin – pilot of the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon in 1969 – will recruit 22 fans from across the world to experience just what it’s like to be 100 kilometres above the surface of the earth.
“Space travel for everyone is the next frontier in the human experience. I'm thrilled that Lynx is giving the young people of today such an extraordinary opportunity to experience some of what I've encountered in space,” Aldrin says.
Only the brave and the bold
Guys and girls from more than 75 countries can win their place on the Lynx sub-orbital shuttle – run by international space agency SXC – if they make it through the selection process.
Potential astronauts initially sign up for the Space Academy by creating a profile on AXEApollo.comLink opens in a new window or LynxApollo.comLink opens in a new window and telling the world why they should travel into space. Those with the highest number of votes will qualify for the challenge weekend, which will be held this summer in their local country.
A select few will then head on to the final stage at the Florida-based Axe Global Space Camp in Orlando for a taste of life as an astronaut before finding out if they have made the final cut.
International astronauts
Different countries have different numbers of allocated spaces on the flight, for example Canada has two spots while the UK has one. However, would-be space travellers in the US also have a chance to win a bonus ticket that allows them to skip local challenges and boot camp in celebration of Axe’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial.
The launch of the Space Academy celebrates the new Lynx/Axe Apollo range which features shower gels, shampoo and deodorants.
Tomas Marcenaro, Global Vice President for Axe, says: “For the first time, we’re simultaneously launching one global competition in over 75 countries, offering millions of people the opportunity to win the most epic prize on earth. A trip to space – yes, actual space."
