With Domestos, you can say goodbye to germs. Thick and long-lasting, Domestos kills all known germs dead – whether they’re in and around the toilet, or hiding in dirt and limescale.
Domestos bleach is powerful and quick-acting to cut through stains and grime, destroying the germs within. Its directable pack and long-lasting germ kill formula mean that you can target germs and keep them away for longer than with thin bleaches.
Domestos was launched in the UK in the 1920s, and was sold door-to-door by salesmen on bicycles. At that time, it was used in the home as a solution to whiten cotton and household surfaces, and salesmen were assigned to do live demos.
During the 1950s Domestos started to get involved in health education campaigns to encourage polio vaccination. In the 1960s Domestos was acquired by Unilever and the famous Domestos Thick Bleach was successfully launched, gaining international expansion.
But Domestos has come a long way since it started as a bottled bleach. The range now includes: liquid thick bleach and spray, limescale removers with unique fragrances and properties and fragranced toilet rim blocks.
So Domestos provides a wide range of products to address all toilet cleaning needs, becoming a ‘germ kill’ expert.
In fact, different problems in the toilet need different products, and Domestos has all the right weapons in its range to fight them:
Thick Bleach kills germs that hide above and below the waterline and it removes organic soils, urine stains and moulds.
Limescale Removers, special products with an acid base, to fight against limescale and rust.
Solid rim blocks to provide you with a burst of hygiene, freshness and fragrance.
Available in 35 countries as Domestos, Domex, Glorix, Vim, Promax and Klinex – germs don’t stand a chance.
Battling germs around the world
Unilever scientists are constantly developing Domestos to find more effective ways to tackle household germs.
Domestos Thick Bleach is the innovation that has helped people around the world get to grips with germs. Its unique super-thick cleaning formula is designed to kill germs that live in the toilet even under the rim and below the waterline. Domestos Thick Bleach even clings to vertical surfaces to banish germs, leaving a clean, hygienic finish.
To help improve general hygiene and health standards in communities around the world, Domestos works closely with scientific bodies and other major organisations.
In fact, Domestos is not only engaged in providing sanitation, but also in increasing access to it. Its Social Mission programme, launched in 2009, involves partnerships with the World Toilet Organization and UNICEF with a target to help build a ‘clean, safe toilet for all’. So it is not only a brand delivering functional performances, but also a brand with a purpose and a real commitment.
Domestos is actively involved in World Toilet Day. It is estimated that there are 2.5 billion people in the world today without adequate sanitation and every 20 seconds a child dies because of problems related to poor sanitation. Domestos has decided to play its part in helping the revolution in sanitation become real.
For this reason the brand started the Domestos Toilet Academies programme together with the World Toilet Organization. This is a brand new approach to help solving the sanitation crisis, where the building of these Academies will help local entrepreneurs create and sell toilets and educate local communities.
In 2012 Domestos and the Unilever Foundation joined forces with UNICEF to bring improved access to basic sanitation to hundreds of thousands of people in need by supporting UNICEF’S Community Approaches to Total Sanitation (CATS) programme.
As part of this partnership, Domestos gave consumers the opportunity to help improve access to basic sanitation through a cause-marketing campaign on supermarket shelves. During the summer of 2012 Domestos contributed 5% of its average proceeds received from the sale of specially marked bottles in select countries to support UNICEF’s CATS programmes in South Sudan and Vietnam.
