My competencies
Competencies are practical behaviours which form part of the way you operate in working life. They include team working, initiative, strategic planning and organisation skills.
Step 1 of 6: My competencies
Knowing which competencies are particular strengths or weaknesses for you is vital: it helps you identify your development needs and suggests which areas will make best use of your natural talents.
The great thing about competencies is that you can apply them in any professional domain. For instance, if you're a team player, you can draw on that strength during your whole career – no matter how many moves you make.
This exercise will help you to
- identify which competencies you perceive are strengths or weaknesses
- discover the competencies that interest you most
- reveal where your competencies and interests meet, energising you and your performance
- describe your competencies in words employers can immediately relate to
You can use the information gained to
- enjoy your work more
- accelerate your personal performance
- identify development areas to increase your employability
- develop meaningful career decision criteria
- prepare for interviews or career discussions
How to complete the exercise
You'll be given a number of competencies and asked to rate each according to how good you are at it – and how enthusiastic you feel about it. When you answer, consider your life experiences outside work, as well as professional experience.
This exercise isn't about scoring points or getting the right answer. It's designed to prompt reflection and help you plan the best career journey for yourself. Please note that you need to answer each question fully.
On average this exercise takes 15 minutes to complete.
