Be inspired, NY style. Recreate the style of New York's famous delis in your very own kitchen.

New York's world-famous delis have the recipe for a perfect sandwichDoing it deli-style

The word 'delicatessen' literally means 'delicious things to eat', and nowhere is that truer than in America's Big Apple, where delis can offer you everything from a 'cup of Joe' to matzo ball soup or pastrami on rye, heavy on the pickles.

Situated somewhere between a fast-food restaurant and a grocery store, a New York deli is a cornucopia of mouth-watering possibilities. Made-to-order sandwiches, subs, bagels and salads, and almost endless varieties of meats, pickles and condiments – it's something that everyone should experience at least once.

Making mayo

Of course, no sandwich is complete without a dash of Hellmann's mayonnaise – which is fitting, as it actually originates from a New York deli. German immigrant Richard Hellmann opened a delicatessen in NYC in 1905 and started selling mayonnaise made according to his wife's recipe – the rest is history.

And thanks to Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise, which contains half the calories of Real Mayonnaise, your deli-style sandwiches can be good for your waistline as well as tasting great. You can also dip sliced vegetables, such as carrots, celery or cucumber in Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise for a delicious snack!

NYC DIY

You don't even have to visit New York to get the deli experience - you can bring some of the magic of an NYC delicatessen into your home by whipping up your own deli-delicious recipes, such as this 345-calorie 'ham & Swiss bagel'.

Ingredients

2 dessertspoons Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise.

2 plain bagels, halved.

25g (1 oz) gruyere cheese, thinly sliced.

40g (1½ oz) wafer thin ham.

Handful of lettuce leaves.

1 tomato, sliced.

Instructions:

For your own ham and Swiss bagel, first layer up the ham, cheese, tomato and lettuce on the bottom half of the bagel. Top this up with Hellmann's mayonnaise and sandwich it together with the other half of the bagel.
