At Unilever, you are continuously developing strong scientific skills relevant to your job. For me this has included a broad range of activities from computer modelling and simulation to process science.

I am currently the leader of a large project in the corporate research department, investigating the science required to allow consumers to personalise products. Since joining Unilever as a project engineer in 1984, I have been involved not only in many science areas but also in a vast array of consumer applications, including the cooking of ham, the freezing of ice cream and the development of new nutritional ingredients for Flora spreads.

Over the last 20 years I have built up my expertise and now lead projects in this area. I have received internal recognition for the number of patents I've filed, as well as team awards for projects on biocatalysis, nutritional fats and food crystallisation. What has also been really rewarding has been the external recognition of my skills and I am the Royal academy of engineering visiting professor in product design at the university of Bath in the UK.
