Unilever has won the award for Best Environmental Report at the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) UK Awards for Sustainability Reporting.

Judges praise report

ACCA, an international accounting body, announced the winners of the UK Awards for Sustainability Reporting at a ceremony in London on 23 February.

The judges said Unilever's Environmental Report 2004 (published in May 2005) provides a clear picture of how sustainability issues are managed, and demonstrates a strategic and embedded approach to sustainable development.

They commended Unilever for a "very readable report: it is clearly set out, the graphics and diagrams are easy to interpret and it is well presented". The report presents a concise overview of the company's environmental activities and performance, supported by short and long-term targets up to 2009.

There are ACCA awards in four categories: Environmental Reporting, Social Reporting, Sustainability Reporting and an Electronic Media Commendation.

The theme for the 2005 awards was countering bribery and corruption. Unilever was commended for communicating and monitoring employee awareness and attitudes to the Code of Business Principles.

Tom Morrow, from Unilever's Safety & Environmental Assurance Centre, said: "I'm proud to accept the award on behalf of my colleagues and our partners who challenge us to ensure objectivity and transparency in our reporting."

Unilever last won the award in 2003.
