A panel of nine expert judges selected companies, individuals and governments that have made the most significant impact against climate change. The judges used research from Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, a leading ethical investment research agency, to make their choices.

Unilever received an award for its work in reducing annual carbon emissions. The award recognised Unilever's efforts to tackle climate change and improve the eco-efficiency of its manufacturing processes. Unilever was fourth out of a group of ten companies.

Dr Steve Howard of The Climate Group said the awards show the "best examples of companies, cities, states and individuals who have taken a dynamic and pro-active approach to the issue. They have seen that the solutions to climate change are possible, available and cost effective."

The full list of winners was published in the Top Green Companies  special report featured in Business Week magazine.
