June 2006: Unilever Canada wins GE Ecomagination Leadership award

Unilever Canada's site at Rexdale, Toronto, has been awarded a GE Ecomagination Leadership award for its work on reducing water use and air emissions.

Reducing emissions & saving money

Rexdale manufactures margarines and oil such as Becel and Imperial. The site has been working with GE Water & Process Technologies, a division of General Electric, to improve production efficiency while decreasing water use, chemical use and energy consumption.

Installing GE waste water treatment technology has led to significant environmental and operational savings. Since 2004, the site has saved almost 13 million gallons of water and reduced natural gas consumption by 8%, resulting in operational savings of USD $300 000.

The GE Ecomagination Awards recognise GE customers who have demonstrated a commitment to addressing environmental challenges, while at the same time conserving energy, addressing safety concerns and reducing overall operating costs.

Commenting on the award, Jeff Garwood, president and CEO, GE Water & Process Technologies, said "Unilever Canada demonstrated that increasingly, what is good for the environment can also be good for business".
