We seek to improve continuously the health, safety and well-being of our employees.

Our performance

Our global health and safety standards apply wherever we operate in the world and are based on the international standard OHSAS 18001. Our goal remains the elimination of all fatalities associated with our operations and the continual improvement of our overall health and safety performance.

We have been measuring our performance in this area for ten years.

Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) – Workplace accidents resulting in time off work or some temporary restriction in the work that the injured person can undertake.

Total Recordable Frequency Rates (TRFR) – All workplace accidents, excluding only those that require simple first aid treatment.

Our priorities for 2007

The Unilever Health & Safety at Work Committee consists of senior health and safety practitioners from the business who advise on occupational health & safety. The Committee’s focus for 2007 is:

  • Safe travel and transport
  • A special focus on improving the sites with a poor record of safety performance
  • Refining and implementing regional behaviour-based safety programmes
  • Putting in place new noise at work and ergonomics training programmes
  • Strengthening further our internal governance processes with respect to compliance with our own internal health & safety standards
  • Implementing a new global performance reporting system.

* In line with industry best practice, we include in our definition of an 'employee', temporary staff and contractors who work under our direct supervision.

** In addition to the recordable fatality data in the chart, where such accidents may be deemed associated with our operations, Unilever requires its organisations to report fatal accidents involving members of the public, and those which occur at third-party contract manufacturers where they are producing goods and services for Unilever.

In common with the other companies in our industrial sector, these incidents are only reportable internally.
