Waste & Packaging

The packaging challenge

Increasing resource scarcity means it is more urgent than ever to be efficient with packaging and to find solutions to deal with ‘post-consumer waste’ - packaging and product thrown away after use by our consumers. But we recognise we must go further.

The packaging challenge

We believe business needs to go beyond being more efficient. It should give back, rather than simply take from, the earth’s resources.

The business case is clear. The more we reduce our packaging and the less waste that goes to landfill, the greater the cost savings in materials, energy, transport and disposal. The more we can design in a circular way, the more value we can create for our company and for others.

As part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan we have set ourselves an ambitious goal to halve the waste associated with our products by 2020 and all our manufacturing sites will send zero non-hazardous waste to landfill by 2015.

Our waste strategy

We are committed to reducing our packaging without compromising on protection or safety.

Targets & performance

We are proud to become a global partner of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

We are investing in breakthrough technologies, such as bi-modal resins to reduce the weight of skin care and hair care bottles, and to develop compressed aerosols for our Sure, Dove and Vaseline deodorant brands.
