Celebrities on social media and the picture perfect world of fashion may have an unrealistic idea of what’s beautiful, but out here in the real world, beauty is in the heart, mind and eye of the beholder—it’s big, it’s unconventional and it’s amazingly diverse. For girls and women across the globe, the constant bombardment of flawless physiques and unrealistic appearance expectations can lead to feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety.

But together, we can spread a different message.

Since 2004, the Dove Self-Esteem Project has been running workshops and educational programmes designed to counteract all these appearance pressures. While there’s still a way to go, so far the programmes have helped 29 million young people across 138 countries realise they’re beautiful just the way they are. So every time you choose a Dove product to help improve your own self-esteem, you’re also contributing towards projects that continue to help millions of other girls improve theirs, too.

In 2017 we reached 5.8 million young people – our biggest reach in a single year to date. But we can still do so much more. With your help, we can reach our ambition of helping 40 million young people by 2020.

Whether you’re a teacher, parent or youth leader, the Self-Esteem Project has a host of valuable resources to help you show the young people around you just how awesome they are. We’ve worked with world renowned body image experts and leading universities, including psychologists from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at the University of the West of England (UWE), to develop effective tools that have proven positive impacts.

We’re on a mission to increase body confidence in girls from the get go. Partnering with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), we’re aiming to get the message out globally to as many young women as possible. In fact, we developed Our Free Being Me programme directly with the WAGGGS, and since kicking off in 2013 it’s helped 4 million girls in over 125 countries wake up each morning feeling that little bit more confident to take on the world.

Thanks to your dedication to the Dove brand, this year we’re scaling up the Self-Esteem Project and taking it to some exciting new places. We’ve partnered with the critically acclaimed cartoon, Steven Universe, to create a series of videos to inspire body positivity in young viewers. Not only is Steven Universe the first animated series on Cartoon Network to be created by a woman, it’s a bona fide global pop culture phenomenon recognised for its overall themes of inclusivity, empathy and reliability—the perfect voice to bring a positive self-esteem message to young girls.

We’re on a journey together, one summed up beautifully in Dove’s Real Beauty Pledge.
