Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)

We use preservatives to keep home and beauty & personal care products in good condition as without them, they could be spoiled by bacteria, yeasts and moulds. We choose our preservative ingredients carefully, making sure they are safe for people who use our products.

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is a common preservative used in the home and personal care industry, however there are concerns it can cause skin allergies in some people.

In our beauty and personal care products, we have removed MIT from the vast majority of our leave-on products globally (e.g. moisturiser). For rinse-off products (e.g.anti dandruff shampoo), we stopped using MIT as a main preservative, however, some products include MIT where it is sometimes used in combination with other preservatives at very low levels.

The presence of MIT in all beauty and personal care products is shown in the ingredients list so that any person who is allergic to MIT can avoid using the product.

MIT is also used in a number of our home care liquid products (e.g. fabric washing liquids). Although these products generally have less direct contact with skin, we are also working to reduce the use of this preservative and finding a safe and effective alternative for these products.

We will continue to monitor scientific and regulatory developments to ensure that all our products are effective and safe to use.

Your questions answered

What is MIT?

MIT is a clear, colourless liquid that is soluble in water. It enhances the safety and shelf-life of products by preventing the growth of bacteria. Without preservatives like MIT, products could start to smell unpleasant, change colour or grow bacteria, which can produce toxins which are harmful to health.

Does MIT cause allergies?

Whilst the majority of people have no adverse reaction to using products containing MIT, studies have shown that it can trigger skin allergies and irritations in some people. That is why we are committed to phasing it out from our leave-on beauty and personal care products and reducing levels in rinse-off beauty and personal care products and home care products.
