The site’s principal focus is on the discovery and application of new technologies that address un-met consumer needs and/or improve product functionality. In addition, Trumbull houses the Pond’s Institute and Unilever’s Packaging Excellence Centre. It is also home to a virtual reality shopping environment that enables us to conduct consumer tests and customer presentations of new concepts before putting so much as a bottle or a cap into production.

Trumbull R&D collaborates with some of the top 20 academic institutions in the world including Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton and Columbia University. Many are within driving distance of the facility which is located in Connecticut, 75 miles northeast of Midtown Manhattan.

Facilities include a virtual reality shopping environment

The team of 400 Unilever R&D employees has expertise in Bioscience, Materials, Processing, Advanced Measurement and Data Modelling and Sensory Science. On-site are also 600 staff members from our Supply Chain, IT, Supplier Management, HR, Finance and Accounting functions. The campus supports a range of diversity and inclusion networks for Unilever colleagues across North America.

Unilever’s presence at this location began with the acquisition of Chesebrough-Ponds in 1986. More recently, teams from the Edgewater Research Lab in New Jersey and Rolling Meadows in Illinois have re-located here. The historical roots of the Edgewater location are the Lever Brothers Company and Unilever Research's Skin Programme, whilst Rolling Meadows was established to develop the Helene Curtis hair care business.

Serving the community

Trumbull has an active Internship programme which gives university students a chance to gain valuable on the job experience during school terms and summer break as they contribute to business delivery. What’s more, its Community Outreach Team leads initiatives to help local schools, charities and social welfare groups.
