Americans experience homelessness each day and don’t have regular access to showers
People experiencing homelessness lack access to everyday necessities, services, and experiences – as simple as taking a shower – that we take for granted. A shower can help people feel like themselves again, can restore dignity, renew confidence, and empower people living on the streets to engage with their communities and seek the services and care they deserve.
Unilever believes no one should be denied dignity, support, or access to cleanliness because they lack stable housing. To help support the homeless community, Unilever launched The Right to Dignity: a commitment to improve the health & well-being of people living on the streets by supporting mobile shower organizations around the country to ensure that everyone has reliable access showers and other basic hygiene necessities.
As we have seen through the work of our partner, Lava Mae, a shower – accompanied by compassionate service and care – can have a transformative impact on someone experiencing homelessness, restoring dignity, hope, opportunity and a connection to their community.
This year, Unilever is supporting Lava Mae, Streetside Showers, Hope on Wheels, Project Outpour and Brooklyn Community Services to help build more mobile shower units and sustain their operations in San Francisco, CA, Dallas TX, Baltimore, MD, Charlotte, NC and New York City areas. Together, we are working to identify other partners across the country that we can support.
Homelessness is a complex issue, one that requires investments in prevention, housing and re-integration, along with resiliency services. While access to showers won’t solve homelessness, we hope to help create a larger conversation around the issue while learning from experts and advocates in this sector to help address long-term systemic issues.
