Frustrated with dingy white T-shirts, faded denim, and prematurely worn pieces, cofounders Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd knew there had to be a better at-home solution than the one-size-fits-all products available in the marketplace. With their unique expertise in garment care through their education in Fiber Science at Cornell University and careers at Ralph Lauren and CHANEL, they set out to develop solutions that increased the lifespan of clothing and household investments, while helping eliminate the harsh chemicals and cost of dry cleaning.

After two years researching and developing products that were both effective and environmentally friendly, they launched The Laundress in 2004 with 13 fabric-specific laundry solutions in one start to finish scent experience—including their legendary Delicate Wash and Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. Each highly concentrated solution was carefully crafted – combining the most effective plant-based ingredients with fine fragrance-inspired scents – and remains the core of the brand today.

Having since revolutionized the laundry room long before sustainability became a way of life, The Laundress has grown its collection of fabric care tools and expanded into the home cleaning and organization space with the same mission— to prove that domestic chores can be sustainable and chic while empowering everyone to clean with confidence.

The Laundress is available online at, the company's flagship store in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, the brand’s international stores in Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Japan and in over 1,500 fine retailers across 38 countries.

After 15 years as an independent company committed to improving the well-being of people while preserving their homes, wardrobes, and the planet, The Laundress was acquired by Unilever in January 2019. The brand is proud to represent prestige home care in the Unilever portfolio and to authentically contribute to the business’ sustainable living plan.
