Unilever executive decorated by H.M. the King of Thailand
Receives Royal Decoration in recognition of his outstanding leadership of the Unilever Thai Group of Companies corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Bangkok, 14 December, 2006 – The former Chairman of the Unilever Thai Group of Companies, Mr. Leo Oosterveer, was today honoured by His Majesty the King of Thailand with a Royal Decoration, "The Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn", for his leadership of the Group's corporate social responsibility initiatives in 2004 and 2005.
Specifically, the citation accompanying the announcement of the Royal Decoration mentioned Mr. Oosterveer leadership relating to the construction of the Unilever Family Learning Center, an important new addition to the Children's Discovery Museum, which was opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in December 2004 and to Unilever's comprehensive tsunami relief assistance during 2005 which included the construction of four schools in the south of Thailand and is generally regarded as the largest tsunami relief contribution made by any foreign company to assist Thailand in its hour of great need.
Under the Mr. Oosterveer's leadership, and working in partnership with the Thai Ministry of Education, provincial authority and with additional funds contributed by Unilever Australasia and Unilever Germany, the Unilever Thai Group of companies rebuilt and refurbished four primary an secondary schools in the two worst-hit provinces in southern Thailand, donated 6 playgrounds, built a Youth Center, and funded a vocational development project, in addition to emergency donations of cash and products.
Speaking at the Royal Decoration presentation ceremony Mr. Oosterveer said he was deeply honoured by the decoration. "For me," he said, "this Royal Decoration underlines Unilever's long history of partnership with the people and Kingdom of Thailand. Over the last 74 years Unilever has become an integral part of Thai daily life and we are proud to also be considered an outstanding corporate citizen that invests in the Kingdom's future under our corporate social responsibility initiatives." Mr. Oosterveer added that he also felt very honored to have had the opportunity to work with the Unilever Thai team of 3,000 outstanding Thai employees to serve the Thai people.
