Innovation is a great driver of growth – and few people are as ingenious and inventive as Asghar Nishan Malik. As Unilever’s Cold Chain Manager in Pakistan, Asghar has overseen a range of innovations that have made our ice cream business more efficient, built brand equity and increased sales.

Keeping ice creams – and vendors – cool while sales heat up

Thanks to Asghar, many vendors selling our Wall’s brand in hot, hilly areas of Pakistan now have efficient motorised trikes to replace the pedal-powered versions they used before – a development which has increased sales by 30% in trials. Among many other successes, Asghar also led the redesign of the vendors’ ice cream cabinets, a critical issue in Pakistan’s heat.

“We have an acute shortage of electricity in Pakistan, so developing a cabinet which would sustain 12 hours without electricity was a challenge for us,” Asghar explains. Now 90% of cabinets in Pakistan have a 12-hour power back-up, while the reductions in product spoilage and losses have reinforced the commitment of our 4,000 vendors, or ‘hawkers’.

“I’m really inspired, because when I spoke to the hawkers they were very happy, and they really feel the change in their life,” Asghar says.
