Unilever’s Project Sunlight rolls out the yellow carpet

Unilever’s Project Sunlight (renamed Unilever brightFuture in 2015) rolled out the yellow carpet at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards in the US on Saturday 1 March to shine the spotlight on people in the film industry who are helping to create a brighter future.

Personal stories from film industry insiders

Actors and film-makers shared their stories about making a positive difference in society and promoting sustainable living, along with their hopes for a brighter future and what they’re doing to help create it.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Scooby Doo, joined Project Sunlight to talk about her own story and help capture those of others attending the awards.

She says: “Of all the roles I’ve played as a film and television actress, the most important one by far has been being a mom. It’s changed my motivation, my inspiration and my day-to-day behaviour as I think about the future for my children.”

Bright Future Award

Recognising the power of film to inspire change, Project Sunlight is also sponsoring the first-ever Bright Future Award, honouring a film-maker whose work motivates people to take action to create a better world.

Patrick Creadon won the inaugural Bright Future Award. His film, If You Build It, exemplifies the power of hands-on education and the impact a few budding creative minds can have on the future of a community. As part of the award, Unilever provided Creadon with a grant to continue making inspirational films.

Living well & living sustainably

Project Sunlight, which was launched in Indonesia, India, the UK, Brazil and the US in 2013, aims to build momentum behind a growing community of people who believe it is possible to build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably, without compromising the needs of future generations.

Kees Kruythoff, President, North America at Unilever, says: “As our products touch 2 billion people who use them every day, we have the ability to reach and galvanise them. Our scale, coupled with the inspired stories and influence of those that are being honoured by Film Independent, is a truly powerful combination to inspire people to want to take small steps to create a bright future for our children.”
