Responding to natural disaster
Floods hit the Kashmir region in September 2014, killing hundreds of people and causing widespread disruption to infrastructure. The first priority was saving lives, followed by restoring normality for our business, our partners and the communities that depend on them.
Unilever Hero Priyadarshi (PD) Pandey had recently been appointed Assistant Area Sales and Customer Manager in Jammu and Kashmir when the flooding struck. As the region began a 15-day power shortage with communications severely restricted, PD Pandey set about ensuring the safety of every member of his team before rebuilding the ability of retailers and local partners to keep business going in hard times.
“There was no communication. There was no transportation. The biggest challenge was to save the lives of the people,” says PD Pandey, who enlisted the help of army helicopters and teams of boats and vehicles.
“There was also a big challenge in restarting business in the valley because retail sellers’ money was stuck in the market. Their stocks were completely damaged. Wholesalers were not able to repay because their money was also stuck in the retail markets. So we provided some help for them to stand up and recover.”
