Many people living in slum conditions in Lagos have no formal waste collection. This puts them at risk of diseases such as malaria, cholera and dysentery. Drains become clogged with litter, leading to floods and stagnant water pools that are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. And with no other way to manage the waste, locals often resort to lighting trash fires, polluting the air and creating further safety hazards.
What if there was a solution where waste was properly recycled and locals took a responsible role in waste collection? That’s the question that Wecyclers set out to answer with its pioneering rewards-for-recycling platform.
Wecyclers incentivises people in low-income communities to capture value from their waste. A fleet of Wecycle collectors on cargo bikes pick up recyclable waste from households and deliver it to collection, sorting and packaging hubs around Lagos.
Each kilogram of recycled waste provided by locals is rewarded with points which they can exchange for food and household items, all logged in a handy app. Get involved and join over 20,000 households that are capturing value from their waste.
