Create a respectful and open world for natural hair (US)

The issue

All women experience pressure to conform to certain beauty standards. But, for black women and girls in the US, many aspects of their daily lives are impacted by unfair judgment based on hair texture and discrimination against protective hairstyles including braids, locs and twists.

At the moment, it is legal to discriminate against a person in the workplace or in schools because of their natural or protective hairstyles. This is the case in all states except for California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, Washington, and Maryland.

And, black women in the US are 1.5 times more likely to be sent home or know of a black woman sent home from the workplace because of her hair.

What we can do about it

Dove strongly believes that natural hairstyles should be celebrated, not discouraged.

That’s why it has founded the CROWN Coalition along with National Urban League, Color Of Change, and Western Center on Law & Poverty. The Coalition aims to advance anti-hair discrimination legislation and has introduced the CROWN Act into law in seven states already.

Now it needs you to join the movement to create a respectful and open world for natural hair.

It’s time to shatter race-based hair discrimination – sign this petition to urge legislators to vote YES on The CROWN Act.
