Unilever CEO Paul Polman believes collaboration is crucial in driving forward solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Becoming a sustainable business

Unilever hosted a series of round table discussions with 58 sustainability experts to mark the second anniversary of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan in London on 22 April 2013.

The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan set out our vision to accelerate growth in the business, while reducing our environmental footprint and increasing our positive social impact.

The second year Progress Report shows how we have made steady progress towards our goals but it also outlines the challenges ahead.

Discussion topics

Unilever held discussions with experts across six key areas:

  • Sustainable Innovation
  • Health and Well-being
  • Sustainable Business Models
  • Sustainable Sourcing
  • Enhancing Livelihoods
  • Brands and Sustainable Consumption.

The discussions will help shape Unilever’s aim to become a sustainable business.

“We have the collective power to change much more than we probably realise,” Paul Polman told attendees.

“We are not sure if it is one minute past twelve or one minute to twelve – but now is the moment."

“I think we all realise that if we don’t start to take tangible actions now then it is actually very difficult, very costly or, some would say, impossible to reverse some of the stresses we are putting on planet earth and on our fellow human beings.”
