The importance of looking after your heart health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death globally. Yet it is largely preventable through better diets and a healthier lifestyle. Understanding heart health can be a major trigger for people to move to better diets.

We have a long heritage of providing products that help people look after their heart health. In 2000, we introduced our Becel/Flora ProActiv spreads, which are rich in essential polyunsaturated fats. They also contain added plant sterols, which have been clinically proven to lower cholesterol. We followed this in 2004, by adding mini health drinks, milk and yoghurt to the brands’ range.

With greater awareness, people will be better equipped to make healthier food choices and lead better lives. We use our scientifically based behaviour change methodology (PDF | 3MB) to encourage better eating and living habits.

For example, in 2013 we pioneered Becel and Flora ProActiv’s three-week challenge, ‘It Takes a Village’. Each year, this is helping many people with elevated cholesterol make small changes in their lives, so that they can adopt a healthier diet and lifestyle. The results of the campaigns are encouraging, with over 80% of participants lowering their cholesterol significantly.

We are also stepping up our awareness-raising activities on heart-healthy eating. We are extending our traditional communications with healthcare professionals and scientists to include other food commentators such as bloggers, as people increasingly seek advice from a wide range of sources.
