This year’s celebrations on 9 April mark the 35th anniversary of Ben & Jerry’s business, and its 34th Free Cone Day.

Hundreds of Ben & Jerry’s stores from Singapore to Helsinki together will hand out more than one million scoops on the day from old favourites such as Cherry Garcia and Phish Food to the new taste-bud tickling Liz Lemon.

Fans can each get a scoop of Vermont’s Finest ice cream at participating scoop shops.

A big thank you

Free Cone Day has been an annual Ben & Jerry’s tradition since 1979 when co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield gave away free ice cream to the local community in Vermont, US to thank them for their support.

Ben & Jerry’s CEO Jostein Solheim says: “There is nothing else in the world like Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day.

"We’re fortunate to have the most passionate and supportive fans in the world; it is our honor to continue the tradition to say thanks with a day of free ice cream once again."

Giving something back

To actively practice its mission statement, Scoop Shops around the world are supporting different local causes on Free Cone Day to fulfil the mantra “Business has a responsibility to give back to the community.” Europe-based fans can also get behind Ben & Jerry’s Supporting Better Dairy campaign which is calling for minimum welfare standards for Europe’s 23 million dairy cows. At present, there are EU regulations in place to protect chickens and pigs, but not cows.

This year Ben & Jerry’s has also built a "Cone Together" Facebook app to help people find a friend to share the fun.
