Simple celebrates groundbreaking women
Simple is celebrating pioneering women who really make a difference through their passion and drive by supporting MAKERS, an online living library of powerful stories.
First-of-a-kind digital project
It teamed up with internet company AOL and US TV network PBS to create a first-of-its-kind digital video and broadcast experience that aims to become the largest collection of groundbreaking women’s stories ever assembled.
Simple fans can view hundreds of stories from trail-blazing women from Supreme Court judges, US Secretaries of State and CEOs to athletes and entertainers at MAKERS.com, where new content is continuously added.
This includes six Next MAKERS – incredible women who have made a remarkable impact on a local level. They were nominated by the general public to tell their stories on MAKERS.com and have each received a $10,000 grant from Simple to continue their work.
Premiering The Makers documentary
Many of the stories from well-known names such as Martha Stewart, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and Hillary Clinton, along with those from non-celebrities, feature in the three-hour documentary, MAKERS: Women who Make America.
Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, it tells how women have helped shape America over the last 50 years through one of history’s most sweeping social revolutions.
Rolling out the red carpet
The documentary premiered in New York at the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall for an exclusive audience on 6 February 2013.
Introducing the film, Unilever’s Personal Care Executive Vice President Gina Boswell said: “Let me put a twist on a well-known saying: Conventional women seldom make history. And I believe that’s true of conventional brands too. So at Simple, we will continue to do things differently, unconventionally – and we thank you for doing that too.”
The documentary airs on PBS on Tuesday 26 February 2013 at 8pm (North American Eastern Standard Time). US fans can check out a preview of the documentary at pbs.org/MAKERS
