National Water Company and Unilever Sign MOU

Joint initiative to tackle water scarcity issues across the Kingdom through education.

Outdoor sink and tap in Riyadh, KSA

Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – 23rd January 2012. Unilever, one of the world’s leading suppliers of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Water Company to address the issue of water scarcity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Unilever will be working with the National Water Company to carry out a community out-reach program with the objective of educating children and households about the importance of water and tips on how to conserve it via its better utilization. This is one of the first collaborations between the National Water Company and a private company to address the issue of water scarcity in the Kingdom.

According to Yasser Joharji, Managing Director, Unilever KSA “We are delighted to be partnering with the National Water Company to educate consumers about water conservation and encourage people to take small everyday actions that can add up to make a big difference to the issue of water scarcity. Water is a key area of Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan and this initiative will help us make a difference in our community.”

“National Water Company was established in mid-2008 and today it stands as one of the leading water utility companies in the MENA region. Our corporate mission is to improve the water and wastewater services in the country as well as protect the environment, thus ensuring we have a sustainable supply of water for the future. We have found a perfect partner in Unilever, as Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan is inspiring and we look forward to working with Unilever to address this burning issue of water scarcity,” adds Loay Bin Ahmed Al Musallam, CEO, National Water Company.

As part of its Sustainable Living Plan, Unilever is looking to reduce the water associated with the consumer use of its products by half.

In a water usage study conducted by the National Water Company, the largest proportion of water used at homes in KSA cover its use for laundry (26%), bathing & personal hygiene (21%), household cleaning (19%) and dishwashing (17%); divisions that Binzagr Unilever operates in within the Kingdom.

“Along with the NWC we plan to introduce a school-outreach program where we will be targeting both public and private schools across KSA as we believe children are quick learners and great agents of change. The school programs will be further supplemented by a wide range of planned activities to further raise awareness of the issue,” revealed Joharji.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is globally one of the countries facing water scarcity due to limited natural water sources with rainfall average estimated at 70 mm/year. The renewable groundwater represents 11.7% of the groundwater reserves in the country while the non-renewable groundwater represents 88.3%.
