Freedom to breathe signs

Support children’s rights to breathe in clean air

The issue

Children are more vulnerable to pollution because their lungs are underdeveloped and their immune systems are weaker. And yet, nine out of 10 children around the world are breathing in toxins that exceed safe levels. The situation is so serious that UNICEF has predicted that air pollution will become the leading cause of child mortality by 2050.

What we can do about it

When you hear these facts, it’s hard to believe that clean air is not defined as a child’s right by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

All children should have the right to breathe clean air.

That’s the simple message behind the Freedom to breathe campaign, set up by Global Action Plan and Blueair. It’s empowering young people to jointly call on the United Nations to acknowledge their right to clean air – and it needs your support.
