Helping cocoa farmers in West Africa gain Rainforest Alliance certification
Unilever has enabled 16,800 smallholder cocoa growers to gain Rainforest Alliance certification – a scheme that recognises farms that are managed to the standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) , including environmental protection, economic viability, and improved social standards for farmers, farm workers, and their families.
Better farming practices for a better income
Working with our suppliers, we have started to involve smallholder cocoa growers in the process of achieving Rainforest Alliance certification, training them to improve their farming practices. Certification helps them to strengthen their producer organisations, cut costs, achieve higher yields, and ultimately earn more money from their harvests. That means a better standard of living for them and their families. Over 10,000 farmers have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification so far.
