Unilever wins FTSE4Good Award
Unilever has won an award from the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE), recognising the significant improvements we have made to the sustainability of our business.
Improving our ESG rating
Chief Financial Officer Jean-Marc Huët was presented with the inaugural FTSE4Good Sir Mervyn Pedelty Award on Monday 10 December, at the London Stock Exchange.
Unilever was chosen as the winner from a shortlist of companies, representing eight business sectors, which have improved their environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings significantly over the past three years.
Each company was judged on factors such as the quality of its sustainability strategy, progress against delivering on sustainability-related goals and quantified evidence of achievements.
A unanimous vote
The judging panel voted unanimously for Unilever as the overall winner, commenting: “Unilever has set a long-term sustainability vision for what it wants to achieve by 2020, underpinned by more than 50 detailed targets, as well as senior management objectives and incentives.
“It is making strong progress against the targets and is open about where there are challenges and how it intends to address them.”
Sustainability at the heart of our business model
“The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is at the heart of our new business model for sustainable, equitable growth and, excitingly, is inspiring people inside and outside the company,” said Jean-Marc at the presentation.
“We’re 18 months into the Plan and we’ve already achieved so much, but it will all be for nought if we can’t persuade others – consumers, NGOs, governments, businesses – to take small actions individually to make a big difference collectively, and work in partnership to help solve some of the big issues the planet faces.”
Drinks manufacturer Diageo, transport company Go-Ahead and technology firm Intel were highly commended for the award.
The Sir Mervyn Pedelty Award is named in memory of the former Chief Executive of the UK’s Co-operative Bank and former Chair of the FTSE4Good Policy Committee, who was passionate about advancing corporate sustainability.
